Samuel Gragg’s Elastic Chair probably did not influence British designer Marc Newson. Nonetheless, his Wooden Chair is a contemporary expression of Gragg’s “elastic principles.” It includes many small, individually weak elements assembled in compound curves to create a very strong single unit. Like Gragg, Newson used steam-bent pieces rather than traditional joinery to create an unconventional and graceful chair.
