Catoptric Circle Box (the Mouse-Go-Round), 2008
Wood, mirrors, skeletons, bronze, and pigments
Lent by the artist
Walk around this mirror box and consider the ever-changing vantage points. The skeleton almost seems to come alive again, creating an illusion that cleverly challenges our perception of reality. Series of “multiplying mirrors” like this example helped seventeenth-century scientists study and teach optics. Their seemingly magical powers earned
them the name “witches mirrors.”
