A View of the Landing the New England Forces in ye Expedition against Cape Breton, ca. 1760
Engraving with etching and hand coloring
Lent by the Chipstone Foundation, 1970.18

This pre-Revolutionary print is both a precise visual recordof a battle and a commentary on the colonists’ growing discontent over harshBritish political and economic policies in America. In 1745 New Englandmilitiamen helped the British capture the French fort at Louisburg, whichguarded the entrance to the Gulf of the Saint Lawrence River. As the title ofthe print suggests, Brooks’ view highlights the key role that the colonistsplayed in the British victory. Much to the chagrin of the New Englanders, theBritish returned the fort to the French three years later.
