Like tea, wine was a relatively expensive imported luxury. Madeira, Canary, and Porto—wines named after their ports of origin—had always been served at dinner, but with the introduction of the tea table alcohol was brought into the parlor as well. The bunch of grapes depicted at the neck of the wine bottle seen here announced its contents. Hand-blown wine glasses typically were designed with small bowls that were refilled for each celebratory toast.
