This installation brings together two African-American craftsmen separated by space and time. Theaster Gates is a sculptor, musician, performance artist, and teacher from Chicago. Dave the Potter was a South Carolina slave who created massive earthenware storage vessels decorated with poetic couplets. Theaster’s sculpture, music, and video art explore his kinship to Dave, and consider the ongoing struggles that face not only black artists but the working class in America. At the same time, he speculates darkly about today’s museums—and the voices and visitors they continue to exclude.
