by being steamed, in such a manner as to form the bottom & the back of the chair.
the pieces of said wood which form the back of the chair are so bent as to form
the bottom of it also, and are bent as aforesaid & arranged in such a manner,
that the back of the chair is completely braced, rendered very elastic, very com-
fortable & agreeable to the person sitting in it. The bottom of the chair is open-
work. Between the pieces composing the back and the bottom, there are other pieces
of wood of the same size dovetailed into the frame of the bottom, so that the bottom
of the chair is, altho’ openwork, rendered very strong, elastic as well as the back, a
very comfortable & agreeable seat, the chair is very light, durable (& not) expensive.
The number of these pieces bent so as to compose the back as well as the bottom
of the chair are commonly seven but may be varied. The manner in which
the back of the chair is braced by the arrangement of these bended pieces is
this, viz: the middle piece has the bend of it projecting backward from the seat
of the chair beyond the bend of the other pieces. Those pieces next to the middle
pieces also project further backward than those that are next to them, & so
on for the others. So that when a person sits in the chair, the pieces of the back
conform exactly to his body; the two outside bended pieces of the back of the
chair, which are as large again as the other pieces come round by his sides: &
